We are not a club of experts or elites. We are a club of people who believe that how we talk to each other matters — perhaps now more than ever. Since 1942, The Olympic Club has gathered in Seattle to practice this belief together, modeled after Toastmasters and devoted to the art of civil conversation.
What We Hold Sacred
Courage
It takes bravery to speak without a script, to offer honest critique, to be changed by another's words. We practice courage every time we gather.
Presence
No phones. No multitasking. When someone speaks, we listen — fully, completely. This simple act is revolutionary in our distracted age.
Equity of Voice
Every member gets the same time, the same respect, the same opportunity to be heard. The newest voice carries the same weight as the oldest.
Transformation
We don't come to confirm what we already believe. We come to be challenged, refined, and — yes — changed. Growth is the point.
We Are Living Through a Crisis of Conversation
Our public discourse has become a war of monologues. Social media rewards outrage over understanding. Political conversation feels like combat. And in our personal lives, we increasingly substitute scrolling for speaking, texting for talking, performing for connecting.
The result? We are more connected than ever — and more lonely than ever. We have more opinions than ever — and less understanding than ever. We shout across chasms that grow wider with every exchange.
The Olympic Club is our answer to this crisis.
We believe that civil conversation is not a luxury — it is a necessity. That the ability to disagree with grace, to speak with conviction, to listen with genuine openness, and to give and receive honest feedback — these are not soft skills. They are the hardest skills there are.
And they are skills. They can be practiced. They can be learned. They can transform not just individuals, but the communities those individuals inhabit.
Every member who learns to listen deeply takes that skill back into the world. Every honest conversation ripples outward. This is how we begin to heal — one voice, one listener, one lunch at a time.
